Don’t Panic, its Organic!

We often come across the term ‘Organic’ while shopping for our groceries. Many of us wonder that is it just a fancy word added to Veggies? Indeed not! The term ‘Organic’ has a very deep and healthy meaning behind it. Let’s find out!

1. What is the meaning of the term ‘Organic Food’?

Any food grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides or genetic modifications is Organic Food. Generally, Natural ‘desi’ seeds are used to cultivate Organic crops. To protect the Organic produce from insects and pests, they are sprayed with Dashparni Ark, Jeevaamrut and other organic sprays. This Ark contains Cow-dung, Cow-urine, Organic buttermilk, and various Ayurvedic Vanaspatis, thus making it chemical free.

2. Why choose Organic food over chemically grown food?

Answer to it is in the question itself. Who prefers eating chemicals? No one! Even though not visible to naked eyes, chemically grown produce contains chemical residues which cannot be removed even after rinsing and washing them. Nowadays, eating toxic chemicals in the form of vegetables and grains has pushed mankind into the world of excess health issues.

Ill-effects of eating chemically grown food have been seen over the years:

1. As per the National Cancer Registry Programme of the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Cancer Patients have been doubled in the last 3 decades.

2. As per Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India, the life expectancy of human beings has been declined from 100 years in 1950 to 70-80 years in 2018.

3. A recent study by NCBI (The National Centre for Biotechnology Information) has found that rates of new cases of diabetes in children and teens rose from 2002 to 2012.

4. Over a few years, an increase in various diseases such as Heart Diseases, obesity, high blood pressure, birth defects, etc. have been observed by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

In order to feed more people, cheapest and effortless option opted by all of us is to consume chemically induced food. Now it’s time to think about quality rather than quantity.

Benefits of #GoingOrganic:

1. Lack of pesticides and chemicals in organically grown produce helps us to reduce the risk of nerve damage, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and many other health issues.

2. Daily consumption of organic vegetables and grains helps to increase the immunity power. For example, Satvyk’s Khichdi Mix is a unique blend of various nutritious grains, which helps us conquer these benefits. Click on the link below to know about all the perks of eating Organic Khichdi:

3. Green Leafy vegetables are known to be rich in proteins and fibers. However, one can benefit from them only if they are organically grown, without any use of pesticides and chemicals.

4. Helping save the environment is one of the important benefits to #goingorganic. Soil carbon in soil is the most important content which maintains the fertility of the soil. Due to continuous spraying of chemicals and pesticides, soil carbon has reduced from 3% to 0.2% in the past few decades. Organic Farming helps to maintain soil carbon rate. Organic farming also helps to establish sustainability, biodiversity, clean water resources, soil building, etc.

Why haven’t you switched to Organic Food yet? We think you should

In lightof the increasing number of ailments and nutritional deficiencies, we often see health experts stressing on the importance of Organic Food. Let’s take a look at how the concept has evolved in recent times.

So What is Organic?

In coherence with what the name suggests, Organic Food is grown in its natural course without the use of pesticides and fertilizers. It is 100% chemical-free. At Satvyk, we have farmers across India who practice Organic cultivation, have periodic inspections and are subject to stringent safety regulations.

Going back to the Start

Even though The Organic Food industry primarily targets the younger and savvier audience, many traditional methods are employed in farming. For example, Satvyk has a network of women self-help groups, and they perform stone-grinding and hand-pounding to prepare lentils, flour and rice.

All our products are sourced from different states based on their specialty, to retain the native goodness of the produce.

How to Make The Right Choice

A visit to the supermarket is enough to confuse you. All shelves are stocked with product labels reading ‘Organic’ or ‘Bio’, and it might seem overwhelming at first blush. It is important to do your homework before making a purchase.

Research about the company you are buying from, their practices, philosophy and vision. Read food labels to understand the composition of the product. Buying Organic food, which is also local, is ideal. Satvyk enables you to also visit the farm where your food is grown.

World Heart Day 2015: Heart Disease in India is a Growing Concern, Ansari

awareness for World Heart Day, Vice President Hamid Ansari strongly favoured the need to develop a comprehensive approach to combat heart disease in India which is on its way to becoming an epidemic in the country. Latest statistics suggest that in India, there are roughly 30 million heart patients and two lakh surgeries are being performed every year.

World Heart Day is celebrated every year on 29th September with the intent of raising awareness about cardiovascular disease. Every year has a different theme which tackles different aspects of heart disease. This year, the theme on World Heart Day is creating heart-healthy environments.

While inaugurating this year’s World Heart Day event, Mr. Ansari said, “We would need a comprehensive approach to combat heart disease, with a focus on education and access to proper health facilities. For this, both the public and the private sectors have to work together.”

Currently, the key challenges that face cardiac care in India are inadequate facilities, accessibility, the price tag attached to efficient and effective treatment, lack of awareness of non-communicable diseases, he said. Apparently, demographic projections suggest a major increase in cardiovascular disease mortality as life expectancy increases and the age structure of the growing population changes.

Of the 30 million heart patients in India, 14 million reside in urban areas and 16 million in rural areas. He said, “If the current trend continues, by the year 2020, the burden of atherothrombotic cardiovascular diseases in India will surpass that of any other country in the world.”

The growth of heart diseases is dependent on a number of interlinked factors such as ageing, changing lifestyles,  bad eating habits and rapidly evolving socio-economic determinants like access to healthcare. growth of heart diseases affects not just the urban and economically well-off but also the under-privileged.

The Indian rural population and urban poor especially are facing a “double burden” – with incidences of acute diseases continuing, while there is a rapid growth in incidences of chronic diseases, “Today, cardiac hospitals in India perform over 2,00,000 open heart surgeries per year, one of the highest, worldwide. There has been a steady annual rise to the tune of 25-30 per cent per year in the number of coronary interventions over the past several years” he added.

Heart disease is now the world’s leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives each year, he said, adding, India has seen a rapid transition in its heart disease burden over the past couple of decades.

However, it’s been projected that the load of communicable and non-communicable diseases might get reversed by 2020. Listing out some of the government initiatives to combat the heart disease, he said the Parliament in 2003 had also passed the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act to further the cause of prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Deadly pesticides on your plate: Ministry of Agriculture reveals samples of fruit, veg and organic food from across India have ‘high level’ of contamination

Organic food products that you buy from retail outlets may be laced with banned pesticides. Even fresh fruits and vegetables may have residues of hazardous pest-killers in them.

A report released by the Ministry of Agriculture has found traces of pesticides in samples collected from various outlets across India.

The ministry checked pesticide residues in samples of vegetables, fruits, spices, red chilli powder, curry leaves, rice, wheat, pulses, tea and milk.

Officials collected samples from various retail outlets, farms and organic outlets located in different parts of the country, and tested them in 25 participating laboratories for groups of pesticide residues such as organo-chlorine, organo-phosphorous, synthetic pyrethroids, carbamates and herbicides.

A total of 20,618 samples were tested and pesticide residues detected in 18.7 per cent of them.

Chemical contamination above the Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) was detected in 2.6 per cent of samples, as prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The lab results found that 12.5 per cent of samples also had residue of non-approved pesticides.

Over 8K samples

Ministry officials collected over 8,342 vegetable samples from various retail markets. Samples of brinjal, okra, tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, green chilli, capsicum, cucumber, green pea, bitter gourd and coriander leaves were subjected to tests, and in 2.7 per cent samples pesticide residues were found exceeding the MRL.

Interestingly, 3.7 per cent of farm-gate samples and 2 per cent of organic outlet samples were found to be laced with pesticide residues exceeding the MRL.

Similarly, out of 2,239 samples of apple, banana, pear, grapes, orange, pomegranate, guava, and mango, 18.8 per cent contained measurable residues. Also, 1.8 per cent of samples had residues above the FSSAI-prescribed MRL.

“Residues in samples of grapes, pomegranate and apple were commonly found above MRL. There was presence of chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, cyhalothrin-l, buprofezin, metalaxyl and difenoconazole. As many as 225 fruit samples were detected with the residues of non-approved pesticides such as cephate, acetamiprid, carbosulfan, cypermethrin, profenofos, quinalphos and metalaxyl,” the report said.

Out of 805 wheat samples, 17 were found to be carrying residues of deltamethrin pesticides above MRL. At least 6.01 per cent of samples of pulses were found with non-approved pesticide residues.

Out of 1,076 rice samples, 68 were found to have pesticides above MRL.

“A total number of 1,299 spice samples comprising coriander, cardamom, fennel, black pepper, cumin, curry leaves and red chilli powder were collected and analysed, of which 107 samples contained residues above MRL. The pulse samples (715) were collected and analysed and only one showed residues above MRL. In four tea samples, out of 174 collected and analysed, there were residues above MRL,” the report said.

After the report has found concerning levels of pesticide residues, the ministry has started awareness programmes for farmers.

“We propagate judicious use of pesticides. It is very important to raise the education level of farmers so that they understand the hazards of excessive usage of pesticides on environment and humans. In organic produce, there should be no pesticides because these products are sold under the label of ‘organic food’,” said Dr KK Sharma, Project Coordinating Cell, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

“The pesticide residue levels are still in control in India as compared to some other countries. But there is a need for monitoring the use of pesticides and increasing awareness among farmers,” he added.

Organophosphates and carbamates can affect the nervous system. Others may irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides may be carcinogens. Others may affect hormones or endocrine system in the body.

Massive problems with Packaged Fruit Juices and Fruit Drinks

In India, many sweetened drinks are labelled as fruit juice, drinks like Frooti, Maaza, Minute Maid Pulpy Orange, Tropicana and Real fruit juice all claim to be 100% fruit juice but in reality some contain as little as 25% fruit content in them.

Definition of Fruit Juice
If the drink is made using fruit concentrate it is labeled as a fruit drink, beverage, or cocktail. Fruit drinks are usually calorically sweetened beverages with a small percentage of fruit juice or juice flavouring containing water.

Fruit drinks or nectars are composed of mainly three contents, i.e. water, fruit pulp and sugar. Popular mango fruit drinks have more than 10% concentrate while nectars have more than 20% concentrate.

Some of the popular fruit juice drinks ingredients as mentioned on their websites are as follows:
Real fruit juice ingredients: Water, Pomegranate Juice(35.1%)*, Sugar, Liquid Glucose, Acidity regulator (INS 300), Antioxidants (INS 300)
Tropicana Apple fruit juice ingredients: Water, Sugar (7.9%), Apple Juice Concentrate, Acidity Regulator (296), No artificial flavouring, No added preservative, Contains 44% Apple juice.
Minute Maid Orange juice ingredients: Water, Sugar, Orange Juice (11.8%), Acidity Regulator (330) and Antioxidant (300). Contains Permitted Synthetic Food Colours (110,102) & Added Orange Flavours (Natural, Nature-Identical and Artificial Flavouring Substances). Contains Fruit.
Mango Maaza ingredients: Water, Mango Pulp (19.5%), Sugar, Acidity Regulator (330), Antioxidant (300) and Preservative (202). Contains Permitted Synthetic Food Colour (110) and Added Mango Flavours (Natural, Nature-identical and Artificial Flavouring substances). Contains Fruit.

Therefore we can see that most of these fruit juices and drinks listed above have sugar, artificial flavouring ingredients and preservatives apart from fruit juice concentrate in them.

High Sugar Content in Fruit Juices

India is the third most obese nation in the world after USA and China and according to research statistics fruit juices sold in India often contain more sugar content in them than carbonated drinks.

Packaged Juices are low in fibre and high in fructose and so should be had in moderation or avoided completely. Fructose in juices is associated with insulin resistance leading to increase in blood sugar levels, high triglycerides, high uric acid, fatty liver, weight gain, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Harmful chemicals in Fruit Juices
Many packaged fruit juices contain benzoic acid which if spilled on our skin can cause it to burn. Obviously the drink does not contain that amount of benzoic acid but it does a lot of harm in smaller quantities too.
Some fruit juices contain sodium benzoate, which when combined with certain ingredients forms benzene which is found to be carcinogenic. Some of them even contain calcium nitrate and magnesium chloride which can be harmful for our kidneys, intestines and even gums.

Artificial flavours and Additives in Juices
Artificial flavours and additives are added to juices which harm the teeth and intestines. It is found that the juice concentrate is made oxygen less to increase its longevity. This hampers the taste to a certain extent too. So additives and artificial flavouring agents are added to make it taste like the real fruit.

At Foodnetindia we believe that consumers must avoid packaged fruit juices and fruit drinks and eat whole fruit instead. Considering that most people in India consider these to be healthy and many suffer from lifestyle diseases where these should not be consumed, we urge the food regulators to insist that beverages containing more than 5% sugars must carry a warning label as unsuitable and potentially dangerous for adults with obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, blood sugar problems and related diseases.

Chinese companies are making toxic rice out of plastic

(NaturalNews) China is mass producing plastic rice – and it causes some very serious health problems. China’s Wuchang rice is extremely popular and well-known due to its fragrant smell and distinct taste – costing almost double the price of normal rice.

With the demand for Wuchang rice so high, companies have start to exploit the opportunity and create fake rice which they sell for the same high price.

It is thought that China has been producing this fake “Wuchang rice” for at least four years, recreating the popular product using potatoes, sweet potatoes and some poisonous plastic for good measure. It looks just the same as the real deal in terms of shape and size; however, the plastic remains hard after cooking and is seriously bad for your health.

Fake “Wuchang rice”

An undercover journalist found out that, when producing the fake rice, Chinese companies are mixing a small amount of real Wuchang rice with plastic rice, which they then spray with a fragrance to replicate the original and package in the same way.

It is thought that whilst 800,000 tons of actual Wuchang rice is produced every year, a terrifying 10 million tons of “Wuchang” is sold annually – meaning that over 9 million tons of the “Wuchang rice” bought every single year is fake.

According to The Korea Times, distributors have stated that selling artificial rice is extremely profitable, particularly in the enormous quantities that are currently in demand. Companies have managed to get away with selling this synthetic product for over four years until they recently started to distribute it outside of China to countries such as India, Vietnam and Singapore.

The National Food Authority of the Republic of the Philippines is now in the process of investigating reports of plastic rice and is utilizing a spectroscopy device to detect whether or not the rice in question is legitimate. A warning has also been issued.

Dangerous of consuming plastic

Eating just three bowls of this fake “Wuchang rice” is thought to be the same as consuming an entire plastic bag, causing serious and even fatal digestive issues, especially if consumed daily as is often the case.

In fact, most people in China consume over half a pound of rice every single day, and recent health controversies have brought into light the question of whether or not it is safe to use plastic packaging in the food industry – let alone eat plastic rice!

Research has found potentially serious health risks associated with bisphenol A and a class of chemicals called phthalates, commonly found in plastics. Bisphenol A has the ability to disrupt the functions of our hormones, particularly estrogen. It has been linked to effects on reproductive development in several animal studies.

Meanwhile, phthalates are a group of “plasticizers” that are found in various products, despite having been banned in the EU since 2005. Phthalates can also disrupt hormones; however, unlike bisphenol A it is testosterone that is affected.

Each of us likely has a detectable amount of both phthalates and bisphenol A in our bodies due to the contamination of food products that are stored in plastic containers. However, if consumed, the plastic rice in China will likely cause a massive increase in the levels of these dangerous chemicals.

So far, there have been no reports of plastic rice in the U.S.; however, the fact that the rice was being exported and consumed outside of China draws into question whether or not countries are asking enough questions about their food sources before importing goods.

THE FALSE TRUTH ABOUT FOOD TODAY WE KNOW!

The 21st century world is all about mind blowing technology, speed, innovations, startups! This world lives but on the diet of competition. Survival of the fittest is the mantra. Everyone is striving to prove himself in this cutthroat competitive society. Students today know about the latest gadgets launched. Ask a 10 year old and he’ll explain you everything about the new iPhone 7 features including a picturesque presentation of the Apple Event in Cupertino a few days back. Ask him about the messenger service which the Google is about to launch this summer and he is ready with the answers. Your boss will have a deep study as to how to help win the organisation a million dollar deal. A CFA Charterholder will help you manage your portfolio with multiple complexities with ease. You yourself will be acquainted with all that and many such more things in the field of business, technology, finance, automobiles, etc. In other words, you keep your knowledge updated. And that’s actually the way to stay in this competing age.

All that’s really fantastic. But now ask the same guy about the milk he had in the morning. His response would be like, “Man, what the hell are you asking, milk will be like milk! Now, ask your boss about the amazingly red and sugary apples he had after his lunch. I am sure he will comment on the looks and the sugary taste of the apples. When you ask the CFA Charterholder managing millions for you about the canned juice he drinks often during the office hours, he will add a health quotient to it. If someone asks you about the edible oils you use, you will proudly say as it is written on some board in a restaurant “We use only refined oil for cooking” and boast off for being healthy. On the way back home in the evening, you drop down at a grocery store, call up your wifey and ask for the type of rice she was asking you to get. She will definitely stress on the whiteness of the rice. According to her, the whiter the rice is, the better it is! And you get home back with fantastically looking white rice! And guess what, your wife is happier because you got it quite cheaper this time than the last time she had got it!! You are happy as well; because you still remember the furious look she gave when the last time your wife asked you to get tomatoes & brinjals. The reason for the furiousness – small looking tomatoes & pest affected brinjals. She was expecting apple size tomatoes and brinjals like they were ready for a photo-shoot.

Think about all the smiles, boasts, keep your body healthy kinda feelings, etc people had as mentioned above! They are perfectly fine, that’s what you are feeling, isn’t it? If all the things above are fine, you also take care of your fitness with regular morning-walk and gym sessions, then why is there a consistent increase at the rate of 25% to 30% per annum in the number of heart patients in the country? And why is there a rapid increase in the number of cancer cases than it was 30 years ago? You must all be aware of the fact that there runs a train from Bhatinda in Punjab to Bikaner in Rajasthan unfamously known as the Cancer Train. Also there has been a drastic increase in the Kidney failures, infertility, diabetes and the list continues. Why is this happening? Just because of the increase in pollution & changing lifestyle or there is something more to EAT(it). Yeah, you go that right, food and food habits!

The milk, which looks perfectly fine, well packaged and delivered to you will all the requirements mentioned on the packaging and which you feel is healthy may contain more than 20 chemicals, including pain killers, antibiotics and growth hormones, says a study published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. A study conducted by Consumer Guidance Society of India also showed that milk contains high quantities of antibiotics, pesticide residues, pus, bacteria and chemicals like urea and sodium carbonate. Drinking such milk may lead to gastroenteritis, viral fever and even cancer.
Your boss now after having a delicious apple might be feeling that it will keep a doc away, but do you know that an Apple is 45 Pesticides a day!? And to our surprise, some of them are actually banned in various countries including ours. Still they are under private circulation. Or for that matter the so called healthy packaged juice which your investment manager is having regularly may contains chemicals like benzoic acid, benzoate and other harmful additives. It is generally very high in sugar content, which may be a major reason for obesity.
The rice that just made your lovely wife smile may be the reason for worry later. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health proved that the more polished white rice a person eats, regardless of their nationality, they are at great risk of contracting Type 2 diabetes. And the cheaper rice, I pray that it is not added with Chinese rice which is just Rs.15 a kilo. Because if it is, it is just similar to eating a plastic bag causing serious digestive issues. And as far as the vegetables are concerned, you did a great job by getting small desi tomatoes and the pest infected brinjals. Because those are the safest to eat. Eating a desi seed tomato is anytime better to consuming a toxic tomato huge in size cultivated using hybrid seeds. And can you imagine that pest infected eggplants are safer than the photo-shoot ready ones. Yes, they actually are!
At this moment I would like to quote unquote Mr. Alejandro Junger,
“The problem is we are not eating food anymore, we are eating food like products. (Hungry For Change Film)

Now you shall be thinking What should we actually eat? What is the real food? The answer to this is the SATVYK FOOD. Stay tuned for the next update with detailed product wise description of our featured products.
